Snoring affects a great number of people all over. It causes people around you to lose sleep which has a number of effects on them. It could mean that you are also not getting enough sleep (and in some cases, a sign of something else more sinister). There are a number of ways to handle such a thing though. If snoring crops up, you may want to participate in a sleep study to see if there is something more going on. This article looks solely at ways to reduce snoring.
Lose Weight
Snoring generally caused by two parts of the mouth meeting that are not really supposed to. The excess tissue is pushing the uvula and the soft palate together. It is suggested that one should lose approximately 10% of their body weight (please consult your doctor though) to remedy this.
Sleep On Your Side
Sleeping on your back is great for you, but it does also raise the issue of snoring (if you are prone to it). More often than not when it is caused by you sleep on your back, your tongue is the culprit. Just make a habit of sleeping on your sides.
Avoid Sedatives
Sedatives, like Alcohol, can cause some muscles to relax that will lead to snoring. While a simple thing it might be harder to avoid some nights.
No Big Meals
You will want to have your last big meal several hours before going to bed. This will remove all pressure from your stomach that can press upwards onto your diaphragm. This in turn will reduce the likelihood of you snoring.
Quit Smoking
Smoking can cause snoring because of the added mucus. It might be hard to quit, but you would likely stop snoring if you did. This is assuming it cropped up after you started smoking.
Use Anti-Congestion Products
Mucus that builds up in the nasal passage can cause trouble in the form of snoring. However, an approved decongestant will help reduce snoring because of its effects.
